Blog Banter #13, no witty title
by Cyberin on Oct.28, 2009, under Community
Welcome to the thirteenth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!
The first banter of this 2nd year of EVE Blog Banters comes to us from Zargyl from A Sebiestor Scholar, who asked the following: On the EVE Fanfest 2009 page are pictures of prizes for the Silent Auction that was held during the event. One of these photos was entitled “Design your own EVE mission”. My question now would be what kind of mission would you write if you got that prize? What would the mission be about? Would it be one using the new system of epic mission arks? What would be the story told by it? Feel free to expand upon his questions and put together your very own mission!

I’m usually very excited when it comes to blog banters and can think of tons of stuff to write…so much that I normally have to tone it down so people might actually read it. This month didn’t do that for me.
I play the game that I’m given. I hardly ever think about what I want to do to make the game better. I may agree/disagree when I hear other people opinions…but when it comes to designing content (other than ships…i don’t mind thinking of those)…I just don’t care.
So, for that simple fact…you won’t be getting some massive mission description out of me, nor some multipart idea for a new Epic Mission Arc…I’m just going to state what I think of the current mission system.
Lots of people do missions. Missions are most likely the #1 past time in EVE (I have no clue…I just pulled that number out of my ass). Sadly, most people don’t do them because they are fun, a huge part of the story, or because they can get tons of special items from them. The simple fact of the matter is they are cash cows…and extremely repetitive cash cows at that.
I have a problem with something in an MMO when someone can make a site that tells you exactly what to do to complete apart of the game…with no bit of variety at all. “Shoot this, shoot that, grab that, warp out, next…”
So what would I do?….I’d have missions completely redesigned…as they are probably my least favorite part of the game. Add variety to everything. I don’t care if they are harder, or easier…I’d just like to be able to have to figure out what to do on my own to make it more challenging again. In a game as open and expansive as EVE is…the mission system is seriously lacking.
