Playing in the Sandbox
by Staxed on Mar.17, 2010, under Community
Casiella, from over at Ecliptic Rift (by the way, one of my favorite blogs…go read it), recently posed a question. I’ve been meaning to get to it, and it’s taken me longer that I expected, but finally…here it is.
…what sandbox professions do you really like? Maybe you practice them yourself, or maybe you just enjoy the fact that they exist, but which ones really expand the world for you?
I know, it’s extremely obvious what I’m going to say here. Ninja Salvaging!
WRONG!!!
Ninja Salving is my profession, yes…it does not expand the world for me. I’ve found all I can find in Ninja Salvaging, I’ve taken it as far as I can, and I’ve done it well (I like to think). Yes, it’s a really fun thing to do, and it’s what I focus on in my day to day dealings. But in terms of the question Casiella posed…it does not give me that sense of wonder, or awe anymore.
So what does do this for me? The Market! Player banking, scamming, trade, insurance fraud. All of that, the overall meaning of isk in EVE is what drives me to an extent. Having the ability to do whatever you want, in any way you want is just awesome.
In EVE, you don’t just buy stuff from the NPCs and sell stuff to them, it most normally goes to another player. But even that in itself is boring. So what! People makes stuff, they sell stuff, they blow stuff up…it’s just economics, not that interesting.
Wait! I know that, that crap is boring…but look closer. The part that is interesting…the part that really captures me is when you get past the CCP created part of the economy. Look at the player run banks, stocks, bonds, even mutual funds…not to mention ponzi schemes and just outright scams. The fact that this stuff started from the ideas of players, and in many cases have been highly detailed in guides, blog posts, and forum threads…and people still fall for them…is just bewildering to me.
And then, my interest goes even further than that. I see people posting things that other people immediately reply back with “you shouldn’t have said that, now it won’t work anymore”. Only in EVE is this normally not true. The Devs don’t run off to squash the abilities of people to scam, or collect their billions of isk in interest from loans. Have you ever seen a loan shark in WoW that could completely destroy your ability to play the game? No? Well I’ve seen it done in EVE.
The world of isk in EVE can be a bright light, shining for the wealth that is out there to gather…or it can be a lurking spider, ready to leap from it’s trap and inject it’s prey with the venom of the “ragequit”.
THAT is what I find the most interesting about EVE…and secretly…it’s what I’m the most talented at
The Life of a Ninja
by Staxed on Mar.16, 2010, under Community
While I’m not the first (and certainly not the last) to post an answer to Seismic Stan’s post about getting to know the people who make up the EVE Blog Pack, I figure I’m pretty much the only one that really matter so I might as well let you newer reader know exactly what makes me the best.
Before I get started on this ‘re’introduction to Hands Off, My Loots! though, I’d like to mention one thing. The Blog Pack, while made of of some really great guys and gals, is by no means the only ‘good’ blogs about EVE. There are hundreds of them out there, and while I don’t read them all, I read well over 250 of them…and they are awesome. So if you want more to read, and have only been focusing on the blog pack, check out these links below to get started:
- Active Eve Bloggers Listing – All Active Eve Blogs
- Eve Player Blogs Archive – All Time Eve Blogs (even ones no longer updated)
- Eve Bloggers – Current Eve Bloggers, in a portal page format
Also, for all you bloggers out there (or just readers), you can join the in-game Eve-Bloggers channel, some of us hang out there…and we could always use more company!
———-
Now, about me and Hands Off, My Loots!
Cyberin is my name, Ninja Salvaging and Quasi-Griefing is the game. I say “Quasi-Griefing” because I don’t actually consider myself a griefer. A true griefer is someone that griefs people in order to make those people quit the game, have a horrible time, etc. I bother people because it makes me laugh…and most times, makes other people laugh…their feelings in the matter are of no concern to me, so technically…i’m not a full fledged Griefer.
Hands Off, My Loots! is simply about me, and what I do in EVE. The main thing I focus on, and which you will see a lot of, is Chat Logs from people that produce Tears. If I do something to someone and it makes me laugh, you will most likely read about it.
I also love to get involved in the blogging community, so you’ll see posts like this, responses to other people’s posts, etc. You will never see me verbally abuse someone in the blogging community for posting their opinion though, that I can guarantee. Though, I may tell them I think their idea is idiotic…I won’t actually think they are an idiot (unless they are
lol).
Goading people into shooting at me is one of my favorite past times. You’ll often hear about me running around stealing people’s ore in belts, or loot in missions. Sometimes I’ll even just randomly shoot people doing stupid things (like Hulks sitting in belts with no tank).
Other than that, I post not so funny stuff from time to times, Character Updates (skills, iskies, etc), things in EVE I find interesting like forum posts, new programs, etc…and generally anything else I find of interest.
So, to review, here’s a list of what you can expect to read in this blog:
- Whiny Chatlogs from Carebears
- Whiny Chatlogs from Wannabe Pirates
- Whiny Chatlogs from Wannabe bad asses
- Community Involvement
- Kill Mails, and Death Mails
- Character Updates
- Anything else I’m interested in
- Your mothers phone number in case anyone else wants a free ride
Oh, and although I try to spell things correctly and not sound like an idiot all the time…it’s worth it to mention I don’t care about spelling, grammar, or making sense 100% of the time. I don’t draft my posts and then read them 20 times before I post them. I normally sit down, figure out what I want to write, do it, read it over once (sometimes), and then hit the publish button. So if you send me a message about a spelling error, I’ll most likely just ignore you

Travels of a Newbie
by Staxed on Mar.15, 2010, under Community
Rolin, of Diary of a Bored Spaceman, posted recently about where he’s traveled in EVE. I figured I’d join the crowd posting after him and post my version.
I started playing EVE in November 2007, though…my Character has less than 2 million skill points. That’s because I’ve started over a few times…and the last time, pretty recently.
So, although it isn’t much, here is where I’ve been so far. And, to make it interesting, I plan to include this image in every month Character update I post…because I think it’ll be interesting to see how the map of a newer character grows over time.
Blog Banter 16: Nothing Needed
by Staxed on Mar.15, 2010, under Community
The third Blog Banter of 2010 comes to us from ChainTrap of the Into the unknown with gun and camera EVE Blog. He asks us: “Eve University turns six years old on March 15th; six years spent helping the new pilots of New Eden gain experience and understanding in a supportive environment. Eve is clearly a complicated game, with a ton to learn, so much that you never stop learning. So, the question is; What do you wish that someone had taken the time to tell you when you were first starting out? Or what have you learned in the interim that you’d like to share with the wider Eve community?”
———-
This is actually a rather difficult topic for me. The way the topic is worded makes it seem like it’s asking what I wished soemone had taught me, that no one did…and I can’t think of anything like that. Everything I can think of that I would have liked to know about, I was lucky enough to be taught by my first two corps.
I started EVE in November of 2007, with a character named Archammer. He’s been in the noob corp for ever, and I stopped playing him after a few days/weeks I think and started a new character after I learned a bit about attributes.
I created another character after that, which is when I started reading the forums, google, etc to find everything I could about EVE. I joined a null sec corp and went out to have fun. I truthfully don’t remember the name of the corp, but I learned a great deal about keeping safe from them. Everything from bookmarks, to undocking, to pos safety. Tackling, fighting, etc…they taught me all of that side of EVE. So even as a noob, I knew quite a bit about how to take care of myself early on.
I also lucked out when I started EVE. The person that invited me to EVE, quit a few weeks after I started, and gave me a little under 8 Billion ISK. I spurged a great deal of it, but with that ISK I learned to trade, and invest, and by the first time I quit EVE I had amassed over 40 Billion ISK. The trading actually burned me out, which is why I quit that first time. Over all the other times I’ve started back up, I’ve avoided trading on that level just to avoid that type of burnout.
Also during that time, I quit that first corp, created a newer character (I think I had quit again, i’m not sure, lol…it’s all pretty hazy)…and joined up with Aeon (of Aeon’s EVE) who is the blogger than convinced me to take up my friends offer of starting EVE…as well as blogging. This is where I really blossomed. I began to mission and mine with Aeon and the crew of Syrkos Technologies, and eventually even ponied up the Cash for us to start the Joint Venture Conglomerate. Both, were lone-wolf entities…created for people, that like me and Aeon at the time, enjoyed mostly playing by ourselves, but wanted some friends to talk with and team up with when necessary.
After a while, I realized that missioning and mining was getting boring, and I was going to end up quiting again. I didn’t want this to happen, so I began looking for something new. In the end, after lots of research, I found Suddenly Ninjas…and jumped in head on…the rest of that story should all be known to you, as I changed my blog over from The New Eden Diaries…to this one. I still speak with Aeon from time to time, and although I know he doesn’t approve of what I do, neither one of us harbor any hard feelings with the way I went.
———-
Well, I got way off topic and turned this into a post about me rather than the topic…sorry about that, it’s my nature as a ninja I guess lol.
I guess what I’m trying to say, is that there isn’t anything I can think of that I didn’t learn as a new player to eve. I lucked out and got taught everything I needed to know, and have thrived in my capabilities because of it.
I can however, say the things that I’m glad I did learn:
- Always have a skill training
- Bookmarks
- Directional Scanner
- Diplomacy (lol)
- Agro Mechanics
There’s lots more…but those are probably the 5 main ones I appreciate learning the most.

Blown into Submission

Wow…just wow. What you are about to read is probably the best I’ve ever done with a single target. While there are a bit of tears, it is mostly filled with stupid losses, more ISK than brains, and in the end…the transformation of a stubborn miner (or…0.0 alt…whichever way you want to believe) into a pacified customer looking for a few new ships.
You met him in my last post, but here and now, you are going to hear the wonderful story of Kiernance…mighty pvp miner!
After I killed piro95’s vexor like you learned earlier, I saw this in local…which of course got the ball rolling on this whole event.
[ 2010.03.13 05:04:33 ] Kiernance > i gonna go flip you can cyberin
[ 2010.03.13 05:04:40 ] Cyberin > ok
[ 2010.03.13 05:04:47 ] Kiernance > k
Really? Sweet. At this point, I’m thinking he want’s to gank me because I stole his ore earlier. In a little while, I actually find out that he’s just bored and wants to throw away some ISK.
[ 2010.03.13 05:04:59 ] piro95 > your orca is death kiernance
[ 2010.03.13 05:05:10 ] piro95 > watch you backs

[ 2010.03.13 05:06:00 ] piro95 > yes are you sure to take them luck
[ 2010.03.13 05:06:04 ] piro95 > i chit
[ 2010.03.13 05:06:16 ] piro95 > may at your place i reflex

[ 2010.03.13 05:07:20 ] Kiernance > ok
[ 2010.03.13 05:07:30 ] Cyberin > i’m docked? i’m still in the belt…
I couldn’t help but leave that part in there…if you can figure out what piro is babbling on about…more power to ya.
[ 2010.03.13 05:11:44 ] Cyberin > lol, you’re gonna loot my can in that Kier?
[ 2010.03.13 05:11:49 ] Kiernance > yep
[ 2010.03.13 05:11:56 ] Kiernance > lmao
This is about the time that I yell in corp chat that I am about to have corp agro on a Navy Dominix…yes, you read that right. Luckily…the guys in corp are all of a sudden interested
.
[ 2010.03.13 05:05:05 ] Cyberin > anyone near Caretyn, might have corp aggro in a sec…

[ 2010.03.13 05:16:17 ] Cyberin > hurry, he’s red![]()
Mr. PvP Miner is going to agro me, a rather notorious Ninja…in a 550 Million ISK ship (750mil with the fit actually). Anyone that knows anything knows that it’s not smart to shoot ninjas. Specially since as you see later, he says he’s a null sec guy and this is just an alt…he should know better…but he doesn’t.
[ 2010.03.13 05:17:17 ] Cyberin > this is a tough decision…lol
[ 2010.03.13 05:17:20 ] Kiernance > lol
[ 2010.03.13 05:19:13 ] Kiernance > all you got to do is shoot
[ 2010.03.13 05:19:30 ] Kiernance > it is just a spray painted domi
[ 2010.03.13 05:19:30 ] Cyberin > i know…but…it’s kina suicide…
[ 2010.03.13 05:19:39 ] Kiernance > nothin special
Lets have a talk Kier if you don’t mind. I need time for the Torp fitted Gank Raven that Hallax is flying, and Onilan’s Rupture to get here, they need a little more time please. Thanks!
Now, this is normally pretty top secret stuff…but I’m gonna let you read what the chat log of a quickly thrown together Ninja Gank Squad looks like. Hope you enjoy!

This next part is out of order now because of that fleet chat, but pretend you didn’t read that, and this happens before we blow him up, but after we get him, and hold him, in structure. I’d also like to point out, that after you see the fit…you might wonder why he kept all his high slots trained on me…the noob in the rifter, rather than the two other people. He could have capped them out and escaped…but didn’t. Reason…he’s…not…an…alt.
[ 2010.03.13 05:23:15 ] Cyberin > up for a ransom?
[ 2010.03.13 05:23:20 ] Kiernance > yea

[ 2010.03.13 05:24:55 ] Kiernance > k
[ 2010.03.13 05:26:03 ] Cyberin > how’s 400 mil sound?
Just to point out…this guy was flashy red to me and my corp, sitting in a belt, not aligned, not moving, with no drones out, didn’t have me locked…for 6 minutes. 6 minutes to warp out because I didn’t have him pointed. 6 minutes to warp out because he realized I was stalling because he’s an experienced null sec guy that should know this. 6 minutes to warp out because he realized he’s being a fucking idiot. 6 minutes to sit there, and lose a 750 Million ISK ship for no reason…sadly, I was too busy during the fight to grab a screenshot.
I waited for both my corp mates to get outside the system, and he still wasn’t aligned. I told them to jump in and align to belt, he still didn’t align. I told them to warp to me, and did not turn on my Warp Scrambler until they LANDED IN THE BELT WITH ME. So much for checking your directional scanner. These are more reasons I think this guy is not an alt…I think they are good reasons.

You pirates will cringe. But, well…I’m not a pirate…and dishonoring ransoms doesn’t hurt me in anyway because the people I prey on are too idiotic to think about it, and because I don’t care that much about the ISK anyway. We discussed it in fleet chat, and decided we would like to have the killmail, and to teach him a little bit of a harder lesson. So we blew the shit out of him…he melted like butter. We even let another corpy that was close by get in system to get on the killmail, though he didn’t get a share of the loot since he didn’t really help…us ninjas are greedy like that! (actually, I offered, but he told us to keep it).
[ 2010.03.13 05:39:05 ] Cyberin > i can’t believe you actually were dumb enough to shoot a ninja in that thing…

I can’t really respond to that…that’s about as good as it gets. Or is it?
Herr Wilkus is known for 2 things mostly within our alliance. He runs our investment program, and he kills Hulks…lots of them…
He answer my evemail, and was excited to help me out. So, while the chat logs are rather dry…and there are actually no real tears from Kiernance about the whole issue…it was a fun, and eventful morning/afternoon for me.
I wasn’t content with just taking his Domi, and his 400mil ISK. I wanted his hulk. After about an hour or so of planning, scouting, and moving his ship into position with my help, Herr Wilkus destroyed Kiernance’s hulk with 1 volley, in an Ice Belt in a 0.7sec system, with dozens of mackinaws watching.
After Wilkus popped him, he sent the standard EVEMAIL he sends to all his victims.

Herr Wilkus > otherwise, we’ll be checking up on you again.
Kiernance > to you ?
Herr Wilkus > either me, or Velocity Prime, however if you pay Prime I cant confirm the transaction until he logs and contacts me.
Herr Wilkus > me, and I’ll have prime put you on the ‘no touch’ list.

Herr Wilkus > ok, got it. Glad to do business with you. I will write the email now, Prime should set you blue next time he comes online.
I almost cried…because now, since he paid (and is actually the first to ever actually pay that protection fee I think) you’ll get no more stories from me about him.

Oh, and for anyone wondering how my rampage through the Caretyn system worked for the locals. When I left for work that day…there were no cans in the belts, and no less than 7 people in iterons mining directly into their holds. 2 of them were from piro95’s corp.
